In
1910, Donald M. and Tirza Adams moved to Spokane, Washington
from Iowa. As farming was his first love, Don raised cereal
grains, apples and milk cows, farming 160 acres on Highway
2, just west of Spokane.
In 1926, Don was loading his crop
of apples onto fruit express cars at the Galena Rail Siding
near Spokane when he was approached by two gentlemen.
The men wanted two boxes of apples. They made their deal,
exchanging names and addresses during the course of the
conversation. Don was quite suprised to find that he was
doing business with Henry Ford and his son Edsel. This
meeting lead to a long association with Ford and their
product lines.
As the winter months provided
small income for the family, Don began selling Ford automobiles
at a dealership in Medical Lake. Later, Don went to work
for a Ford dealer in Spokane who sold not only automobiles,
but Ford tractors as well.
In 1929, the Ford dealer that
Don worked for decided to discontinue the tractor line,
and Don formed Adams Tractor Company in Spokane, Washington
at 810 North Lincoln. In 1932, the operation was moved
to its present location at 1602 East Trent.
While Adams Tractor Company started
as a Ford tractor dealer, over the years, additional lines
of agriculteral, commercial, municipal and turf-related
equipment and accessories have been added to the products
offered. The company is currently an authorized dealer
for Kubota Tractor, Excel Industries, Landpride, Kawasaki,
Great Bend (GB) and Scag.
At one time or another, all nine
of the Adams children worked at the Trent location. Currently,
six of Don's sons, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren,
are active in their own dealerships in Washington and
Idaho. Ken Adams, grandson of Don Adams, is the current
owner and general manager of Adams Tractor Company.
